The ABCDEs of Melanoma

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. The tumors grow in the melanocytes found in the deepest layer of your skin. If the signs of melanoma are recognized early, it is often treatable. Continue reading to learn about the early warning signs of melanoma, and contact your dermatologist immediately if you think that you notice any of the following signs.

Asymmetry

If you notice an irregular mole on your skin, draw an imaginary line through the center of the mole. If the two sides match, then the mole is symmetrical. If the two sides are different, the mole is asymmetrical, which can be a symptom of melanoma. You should visit your dermatologist if you have an asymmetrical mole.

Border

Benign moles generally have smooth, even borders. Moles that are possibly cancerous can have irregular and uneven borders. Check your skin for moles and other irregularities that have edges that look wavy or notched.

Color

A non-cancerous mole is typically an even, uniform shade of brown or tan. If you notice a mole on your skin that is multiple colors, visit your dermatologist. Melanomas may be more than one shade of brown, black, or tan. This type of skin cancer can even be red, white, or blue.

Diameter

A mole that is benign is typically small in size and diameter. You can use a ruler or measuring tape to evaluate the size of any moles on your skin. Melanomas are often larger than ¼ inch in diameter, which is about the size of a pencil eraser.

Evolving

Monitor moles on your skin to see if they change in size, color, or appearance. A mole that begins to evolve is a sign of concern. If you notice a mole changing shape, size, or color, contact your dermatologist right away.
