What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment for varicose and spider veins. This standard method has been around for more than 100 years and is highly effective in reducing the appearance of dark, purple veins at the skin’s surface. Foam sclerotherapy is injected into the infected veins by our team, which not only improves the appearance but alleviates associated symptoms such as swelling and burning. While sclerotherapy is the best choice for most patients, some veins may be too small for this option and are better treated with laser techniques.

How Does Sclerotherapy Treatment Work?

Spider veins and varicose veins are both signs of damaged arteries at the skin’s surface. Spider veins appear when blood pools in veins. Varicose veins result from damaged artery valves that don’t allow blood to flow freely, causing a backup and bulging veins. The injections of sclerotherapy redirect blood flow to healthier veins. In addition, it eliminates the unsightly veins close to the skin.

What Can I Expect During Sclerotherapy Treatment?

Sclerotherapy is an ideal procedure because it involves the simple injection of a solution through the skin’s surface and requires no anesthesia or recovery time. A typical session can last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. Similar to understanding how much sclerotherapy will cost a patient, the time it takes will depend on each patient’s unique situation and the size of the area being treated. On average, patients shouldn’t expect the process to take more than 30 minutes. A series of small injections are made in the skin by our team. Some minor stinging or cramping may be felt, but any discomfort is very mild since we use ultra-fine needles. Once the injection is complete, we will lightly massage the treated area.

Sclerotherapy Aftercare

One of the incredible benefits of sclerotherapy recovery is that patients can resume normal activities right away after treatment. Compression socks or bandages will be worn for about three weeks after the appointment to help reduce swelling and assist the healing process. Direct exposure to sunlight in the treated areas should be avoided as well. If the veins require additional treatment, we will schedule this about four to six weeks after the initial procedure.
