What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a method used to treat unsightly spider veins of the legs. With this treatment, the physician uses a syringe and a tiny needle to inject a foam or solution directly into the dilated vein. We generally use Asclera (polidocanol). The procedure works well for veins of the right size and depth. Some veins that are not suitably treated with sclerotherapy may be treated with laser or other procedures. Fading of the treated veins occurs gradually over the subsequent weeks. Sclerotherapy is a well-tolerated procedure. Because we generally recommend minimal sun exposure to treated areas and compression stockings after treatments, sclerotherapy is best performed during non-summer months.
