As we age, our lips lose some of their rich fullness. For some people, the idea of having thin, tight lips is extremely disheartening, but there’s good news! If you’re not happy with the look of your lips, we’ve got treatments that can help.

Injectable fillers are a great way to plump your lips. The best fillers, in the hands of an expert, can define, smooth, and volumize the lips while keeping them looking natural and beautiful. What makes the best lip filler? Hyaluronic acid is a great product, and there are several different treatments available that make use of it. Here are a few, offered in the Swinyer-Woseth Dermatology offices:

  • Juvederm: Using an injectable gel, this treatment removes moderate to severe lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth for subtle changes that make a big difference.
  • Belotero: This ultra-fine filler is used to smooth away wrinkles and lines around the lips instantly. It’s a safe and well-tolerated procedure with impressive results for a more youthful lip line.

What can you expect when you come in for a lip filler treatment? Before the procedure, your doctor will examine and measure your face, taking photos for your medical records. The treatment itself can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. During the procedure, a topical anesthetic will be applied to your lips so that you won’t feel any pain. Your healthcare provider will then use a thin needle to inject the lip filler, which may cause you to feel a pinching sensation, and may cause your eyes to water. The needle only goes about 2.5 millimeters into your skin. During the procedure and afterward, an ice pack will be applied to your lips to minimize swelling and bruising. Still, you should expect your lips to be swollen, sensitive, and bruised for a couple of days. Lip filler treatment lasts 12 to 18 months, so you should be prepared to come in again when the treatment wears off.
